“Pursuing my passion of exploring and expressing the Landscape in paint”

Russ Newman is a contemporary landscape artist. Being inspired to travel and explore, he spends time connecting to place and captures a direct immediate response. The landscape, people and surrounding elements are distilled into a personal expression through painterly marks.

Many location-based sketches are completed using Gouache, Charcoal and Pastel. These sketches are used as references which inspire more abstracted larger scale studio-based paintings.

The resultant work is a culmination of gathered source material, experience / memory and has been described as “crossover” contemporary landscape painting.

His work has evolved quietly over three decades of painting both outdoors and in the studio; moving from traditional tonal realism through to more abstracted impressions of the landscape.
